Jubilee Trail
House Hosts Annual Awards Banquet |
Our most valuable resource, our volunteers, were
recognized for their hard work in helping the United Way of Parker
County assist our neighbors in need on Thursday afternoon, May 5 at
Jubilee Trail House in Willow Park. Pam Benson, owner of Jubilee
Trail House, graciously donated the banquet hall and provided a tasty
bill of fare for about 60 people who dedicate much of their lives to
helping others. The Board of Directors of the United Way of Parker
County greeted the volunteers as they arrived and incoming President
Janis Teague and Executive Director Kay Greer presented the awards.
One of the most difficult and time consuming duties
of any United Way organization is that of the Campaign Chairperson for
the annual fund raising drive. It literally means taking on a
second job. And of course anyone who is capable of taking on
additional duties already is heavily involved in the community with
mountains
obligations. But, these are the very people who are the most
dedicated in improving their community. Such a person is the
United Way of Parker County Campaign Chairperson for 2004, and past
winner of Chevrolet's Athena Award for outstanding Parker County Woman,
Carolyn Hamilton. Carolyn worked tirelessly in her effort to
increase contributions to record levels. Of course, this means that your
United Way can allocate dollars in our community at record levels.
This, Carolyn accomplished. The United Way of Parker County is
eternally indebted to Carolyn Hamilton for her outstanding service.
Executive Director Kay Greer presents Carolyn with an award for a job well
done!
Joan Shaw has been a been a United Way of
Parker County board member since the "early days" and has
always
shown the dedication, commitment, and leadership necessary to guide the
organization to greater achievement. Joan brought to the Board of
Directors a resume' of much United Way experience she acquired while
living in Georgia. Her peers on the board asked her to take the
helm as President for the 2004 year Her leadership was
invaluable in steering a growing organization to meet the growing needs
in Parker County. As immediate Past President, she remains a
board member for the 2005 year sharing her experience and leadership
abilities to the benefit of all. From a very thankful Board of
Directors and community Joan received the President's plaque and gavel
for excellent service.
You can't have an Awards
Banquet without someone to plan, acquire, and place in motion all of the
elements that
will
bring people together for a joyous occasion. This involves
obtaining the awards, booking the venue, making sure the food and drink
are on time and tasty, acquiring the entertainment and managing the
countless details it takes to put "the bow on the entire package."
Fortunately, the United Way of Parker County has such a board member in
the person of Dr. Joel Kleven. It is truly a kind twist of fate
that Joel has so much energy because much is asked of him and he always
delivers. Joel is ready to assist at a moments notice and has an
arsenal of talents that he uses to forward the cause of delivering much
necessary assistance to the needy population in Parker County. Thank
you Joel for all you do for the United Way and our community.
With Joan Shaw vacating the Board of Directors
as President
the board asked Janis Teague to step in and captain the
ship
for 2005. Janis has been a community servant for many years and
has served on the United Way board for a good share of those years.
Janis has been involved since the "early days" as well. She is a
long time Parker County resident and has an acute understanding of not
only the role of the United Way but also it's need and effectiveness in
our community. Janis brings strong leadership and vision to
the board that will be very much needed as the population of Parker
County grows and the needs of our citizens grow. She is has a
determination, will, and organizational skills to keep the challenge
well in hand. The entire board is very thankful that Janis has
accepted this very important position.
Two very special people were recognized for their
untiring selflessness in service to the citizens of Parker County who
genuinely live day to day in life or death circumstances. They
are an inspiration to all and establish a standard of service to
community that few will ever achieve.
Humanitarian of the Year
Sheila
Frosch, of Crossroads Youth
Ministries of Parker County, has developed a reputation with our
at-risk and homeless youth in our community over the past several years
as being "The Church Lady" for her endless work with this very
vulnerable population.
For
the first five years Sheila has tirelessly worked with these youth whose
home life has robbed them of basic human rights. Sheila councils
with kids in the schools, takes them to get medical check ups, feeds and
clothes them, shelters them, acts as their guardian in the schools, has
take them into her home, cares for their babies, teaches them about
basic responsibilities of life, encourages them to get an education,
motivates them to make a difference with their life, drives them looking
for jobs or to school, takes them out to the movies or bowling.
Sheila is more than a "Church Lady" to
these youth. In most cases, she is the only consistent person in
their life who will love them unconditionally and do anything in her
ability to have their basic needs met.
Crossroads Youth Ministry of Parker County,
Inc. was created three years ago
as a result of well over 100 youth Sheila has touched over the
years. Without Sheila, Crossroads does not exist because
there would not be another person that is more committed to working with
at-risk kids or who has the gifts and ability to relate to them on such
a personal level.
I addition, Sheila has
selflessly given of herself while juggling a family of three kids and a
husband. She is an amazing woman who deserves the recognition for
the work she done in and for our community. The United Way of
Parker County is honored to give the Humanitarian of the Year Award to a
very deserving Sheila Frosch.
Volunteer
of the Year
Ray
Watson, through giving of countless volunteer hours has excelled in
"What Matters" in our community. He always goes the extra mile to
volunteer and exemplifies the spirit of giving. During 2004 Ray
gave almost
100
hours of service to Freedom House. As a Freedom House
volunteer Ray assisted with the Donation Center, trips to Fort Worth to
the Food Bank to pick up and deliver supplies to the Shelter, helped
clients with furniture needs as they move out on their own, yard work at
the shelter and many other things that are too numerous to catalog.
Ray has always answered the call whenever there is an opportunity to
help no matter what the duty.
Not only does Ray assist Freedom House, but
he helps the community in other areas. Ray gave over 1350
on-call hours as a REACT volunteer assisting with victim services.
In addition, he volunteers through his church, at Center of Hope, and many other
organizations. Ray believes service of duty is paramount and never
expects any recognition for the countless lives he has touched. He
helps because he knows there are people who need help. Even though
Ray never aspired to any recognition The United Way of Parker County is
truly honored to bestow on him the Volunteer of the Year Award.
